VanMoof error 55: Internal SIM card problem
VanMoof S3 / X3 (also S5 / A5 where applicable)Dealer neededSafe to keep riding
The SIM is detected but the modem reports an error when using it: it may be locked, unregistered on the network, or electrically faulty. GSM tracking and remote features do not work. Riding and Bluetooth are unaffected.
Likely causes
- SIM deactivated or not provisioned on the current VanMoof backend after the relaunch
- Poor or corroded SIM contact inside the cartridge
- Modem firmware issue
- Water or corrosion in the cartridge
- Network registration failure in areas with poor coverage (usually temporary)
How to fix VanMoof error 55
- Hard reset and leave the bike outside with clear sky for a few minutes so the modem can register
- Install any pending firmware update
- Log out and back in to the app so the backend re-checks the bike
- Watch whether the code returns over a few days; a temporary network issue clears by itself
- If it persists and tracking matters to you, an independent VanMoof-capable shop can test the cartridge; a dead SIM or modem generally means a cartridge swap
Go to a dealer if: Go to a shop if the code stays for more than a week and you need the GSM features; otherwise it can be ignored.
Warranty: Warranty from the original VanMoof B.V. died with the 2023 bankruptcy; the relaunched VanMoof (LAVOIE/McLaren Applied) only covers bikes sold by them after the relaunch, so most S3/X3 owners pay for repairs.
Typical cost: Often nothing; cartridge test around EUR 50-100, cartridge replacement EUR 300-500.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
Frequently asked
Can I ride with error 55?
Yes, without restriction. It only affects the GSM modem.
Why did error 55 appear after the VanMoof relaunch?
Some bikes were not re-provisioned on the new backend right away. A firmware update and an app re-login usually sorts it, but not always.
Is error 55 the same as 56?
Nearly. Both are SIM problems reported by the modem; VanMoof never published the exact difference. Treat them the same.
